What happened? Did something catch on fire again, Wylan?

Kaz and I were testing a theory.

On the plus side, our hypothesis was correct. [Priorities.]

There might have been a slight fire as a byproduct, but we’re fine. Sooty, but fine.

[pearlhandles]

Of course you were.

I am glad that you both are fine. I assume your lab is just as fine?

[ Jesper may or may not be heading in the direction of Wylan's lab to check on 'how fine' they really are. Because he had the time. Or was making the time. ]

More or less, yeah. All the chemicals and equipment are secure. There’s a nasty smell so I opened a window, and I still need to finish sweeping and wiping down everything else. Kaz is helping.

Need another pair of hands?

If they’re yours, certainly. Kaz somehow even makes cleaning intense. It’s stressing me out. Maybe he’ll leave if you’re around to help.

[Wylan likes Kaz, he really does, but the man can be A Lot.]

Somehow, especially cleaning.

It’s probably because cleaning is already stressful in and of itself. I never understood people who find it cathartic.

I’ll be waiting. Just follow the scent, unfortunately.

Ah, it is particularly strong, isn't it?

[ Once Jesper arrives, he looks around the lab with a little scrunch to his nose. ]

You really can't miss the scent, can you?

"You're a very brave man to bear it and help clean." Wylan and Kaz are both covered in soot, but otherwise don't seem the worse for wear. One corner of his lab is, though. They've moved the furniture and separated the equipment into 'needs repairs' and 'just needs cleaning' piles, and a separate pile for scrap/broken pieces. The winder is opened but the walls and floors are also covered in ash. Smoke travels fast.

Wylan goes over to Jesper, holding out a broom and a rag. "Dealer's choice, do you want to help sweep or wipe down the equipment?"

From the other corner where Kaz is ruthlessly mopping an area already swept he chides, "Jesper isn't usually on the dealer's end of those situations."

Apologetically, Wylan mouths to Jesper 'I tried to get him to leave.'

Jesper looks Wylan and Kaz over critically. At least they don't look any worse for wear considering this slight fire.

"You said "slight fire" this doesn't look so... slight," he says and takes the broom from Wylan's hands.

He barks out a laugh at the chiding from Kaz and shoots him a look. "He's not wrong though," he says before smiling at Wylan and leaning in to press a quick kiss to his mouth. "You're fine," he murmurs before pulling away and starting to sweep.

"So what was this hypothesis?"

[Is this an answer to an old question posed? A regular reminder that he just sends Jesper periodically? A response to something he suspects Jesper is brewing up? A way to keep Jesper on his toes wondering what it means? Possibly yes to all.]

[ He looks down at the text and snorts. ]

First of all, yes.

Secondly, you can't possibly know what I am doing!

Absolutely not, then.

I know many things, Jesper, including you.

[pearlhandles]

And if I told you I was attempting to seduce my boyfriend right now?

[ But he's right, Kaz knows many things, especially about Jesper. ]

I would say given how you two already go on in public, the seduction part of the ritual seems an unnecessary waste of time.

You should always show how much you want the other person. It keeps the romance alive, Kaz!

Just don’t let it impact your work.

[It absolutely hasn’t. If anything, Kaz has seen only positive changes in both his friends. He’s just truly terrible at things like this.]

I suppose you’re both going to that festival Nina keeps talking about.

[A very awkward way of trying to show he cares, despite being terrible at this.]

Never... unless it's for the better, of course. Always professional!

[ Jesper knows Kaz isn't the best at the feelings thing and it's okay. It's why they're a good balance! ]

You know I can't turn down the food and entertainment. Any requests?

I’m curious what you now think professional means.

To bring back? [Of course Jesper knows that Kaz is going to work through the event.] Les and Nina are going to share the leftovers of their pie contest entry. Maybe candy apples. I doubt any of the fried food would be worth saving if you planned on sharing it with me later. [Because Kaz of course would eat a soggy funnel cake or corn dog.]

I may also need to borrow you for part of the night. As a lookout. [Who else had the best long range abilities other than his sharpshooter?]

Can you be a professional criminal?

Of course. I know you plan to work throughout the festival. Candy apples it is. You would eat them anyway even if I was able to bring them back later- the fried foods that is.

[ Because Jesper knows his friend well enough to know that much. ]

Course, boss. Just tell me when and where.

I’ve been one since I was born. If you make money doing it, I say it can count.

I would. I figured though I’d have to share, and everyone else would complain about it.

I’m going to break into one of the Council of Tides watchtowers. [Yes, he’s insane.]

An event this big, one of the Towers will be vacated as the members instead take up station along the festival borders at the harbor. I’ll need you to tell me if any of them start heading back. And stall them, preferably.

[He doesn’t have Inej around anymore to do things like this alongside him, and he’s not going to risk someone as new as Kesh, so he’s taking it on himself. After the Tidemakers' final threat though, a threat he's never shared with anyone, he knows the stalemate they have going on won't last long and he needs more leverage.]

[ That was the difference and Jesper knew that deep down. He'd gotten more in debt over the years than turning any kind of profit. ]

True, everyone wants soggy funnel cake and deep-fried Oreos. It's not the same but I bet between Nina and Adonis, we could have our own deep-fried dessert night.

Great, no big deal then. Just a little breaking and entering in one of the watchtowers. Easy.

[ He definitely thinks Kaz is insane! ]
