Hm, no but I will have to try that sometime. I usually have rock on or hip hop.

I’ve heard that it’s regarded as quite the training trope song.

I've heard the same. If there was a theme song while we were getting ready for the big showdown fight a few years ago, no doubt someone would have used that one.

Self-preservation’s taught him to don different elements and angles, like it does to many in the Barrel. He’s less inclined to do it with us these days, but old habits never wither entirely.

What song would you have chosen instead?

Ah yes, that makes sense. No, that's definitely true, old habits never truly die.

Hm, I'm not sure really. But, the first two songs that came to mind were 'Bad to the Bone' and 'Welcome to the Jungle'.

Honestly, I think I'm more amused by Welcome to the Jungle at that particular time and place.

We all can't be perfect. I'm not great at doing it either.

If you could pick a theme song for your life or a particular moment in your life, what would it be?

[noreasonneeded]

I honestly don't know. I'd have an easier time picking a poem than a song. Music wasn't really available when I was growing up and I certainly wasn't going to make my own songs, so I never really became someone who listened to it often. I know songs but none feel that defining. Even at the club I vet the acts but I let others handle the auditions.

In that case, what poem?

”Do not go gentle into that good night” is perhaps an obvious choice, but one that comes to mind. Also “The History of One Tough Motherfucker” and “Into my heart an air that kills.” Also “Ode” and “Wild Nights - “Wild Nights!” All for different reasons, or different times. Not that all that much should be read into reading the words.

[Which means some of these cut indeed very near and dear to his heart.]

Which ones did you know? Thomas and Dickinson?

I was eight when I first read that poem. I can’t say it holds exactly the same meaning now as it did then, but it always stuck with me.

Exactly both of those.

That's the nature of poetry, literature, and art... even music, its meaning changes as you grow up and have other experiences. A book I read as a teenager would not have the same meaning or hit the same if I read it now. A song, for me, is the same way.

They’re good ones, worthy of the recognition.

Songs and poems have a lot in common, I just never listened to as much of the former. Though I do think most poetry is at its best when read aloud.

Agreed, they really are. I'll read poetry if I have it available but it's admittedly not something I'm overly familiar with.

That's very true. What are your thoughts on slam poetry? Is that the same thing?

Perhaps we could trade, then. You make a playlist, I’ll compile some poems.

It’s a form of it, yeah. I’ve passed it being done on streetcorners a few times. Shame it’s not as popular as it once was or I’d book acts for the club. Maybe someday I'll find the time and energy to encourage more of a renaissance of it.

Hm, I like this idea.

You should bring it back for a Ketterdam renaissance. I would try to attend. I've seen it in movies and on fliers in passing but never attended one in person.
