I never thought of it like that but yeah, it is.

It's a common enough sound in New Orleans and Ketterdam. Repetition breeds habit, habit breeds comfort and all that.

When you put it like that, not so unusual then. Likely explains why I enjoy places like London and Seattle.

People aren’t that hard to understand, if a little effort and attention is paid.

And according to a quick online search, it is one of the most popular white noise sounds for people.

And here I thought I was just unique.

Now I’m wondering what are the most outlandish sounds people use for white noise. I feel listening to street crime is probably high on that list.

Maybe metal grinding in a laundry machine. Anyone who found that soothing I’d question.

Not sure I could trust anyone who finds metal grinding in a laundry machine as soothing or loose change in a laundry machine.

I bet people do listen to stories about true crime though. Or violent games.

The stories I can see far more than any grinding, yeah. Even if the content is macabre, a voice is usually less grating than metal in a washer.

Funny though how everyone it seems knows what that sound is like. Every washing machine has met pants with change in their pockets, apparently.

Because my curiosity won out, I had to look this up. Apparently... scratching is an ASMR thing that people like? I'm not sure I could get behind that one.

My eye twitches just thinking about it.

I'm with you, I don't find scratching a comforting sound. Some scratching doesn't bother me, like fingers scratching through clothing, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Agreed. There are some scratching sounds that aren't too bothersome but it's nothing I would seek out to help me sleep.

I can’t think of any sounds I actively seek out nowadays. [There had been a sound once, but as it’s now at sea he’s learned to live without it.] Not just for sleep, but even just background noise while working. It’s more just things I don’t mind, like if certain music is playing it’s fine, but I don’t go out of my way to put it on often. Not like Wylan who listens to music regularly when working.

What is Wylan's music preference?

I'm not surprised though that you don't seek out background noise. For me, it's dependent on what I'm doing. If I'm hyperfocused on a potion, I prefer silence. If I'm training, having music on is sometimes helpful.

Hm, no but I will have to try that sometime. I usually have rock on or hip hop.

He is nothing if not himself - at least some of the time.

I’ve heard that it’s regarded as quite the training trope song.

I've heard the same. If there was a theme song while we were getting ready for the big showdown fight a few years ago, no doubt someone would have used that one.

Self-preservation’s taught him to don different elements and angles, like it does to many in the Barrel. He’s less inclined to do it with us these days, but old habits never wither entirely.

What song would you have chosen instead?

Ah yes, that makes sense. No, that's definitely true, old habits never truly die.

Hm, I'm not sure really. But, the first two songs that came to mind were 'Bad to the Bone' and 'Welcome to the Jungle'.

Honestly, I think I'm more amused by Welcome to the Jungle at that particular time and place.
